I was born into the segregated South of the late 1940’s, where the acceptance of the status quo meant accepting myself as a “lesser than.” The search for the truth of each belief that confronted me was ingrained by my parents, teachers, and the Black Church. The tool of that exploration was the understanding that perspective is seeing through another’s eyes; the precursor to empathy and is pre-eminent in knowing a “truth.” Perspective can change how we perceive an image, or personal interactions.
Photography is attractive to me because it allows me to explore how we humans apply fairness (social justice); how the use of privilege denies agency; and how we as a people convolve these with theology to justify our actions.
In my photographic work I use humor, not comedy, in sharing my perspective of societally accepted norms; “truths.” I continue to strive to create images and stories that look at the common things around me and explore them in ways that others may not see from their perspective.
